With two games of league play remaining, the 2016 Cougar Varsity Baseball team has a home game this Wednesday May 4 against the current first place St. Joseph Notre Dame. A win over the Pilots could place both teams into a tie for the title if both teams win their games on Friday.
“We have a lot to prove,” commented junior Cody Sim. “This is by far the biggest game of our season, but I think we have what it takes to win if we all show up and play right.” With two consecutive 2-1 victories against Saint Mary’s and Pinole Valley, followed by a 2-0 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent (SP-SV), the Cougars have brought their league record to a formidable 6-2 and their overall record to 15-7.
The returning North Coast Section runners up have been receiving heavy contributions from many players to aid in their success.
Senior Clayton McDonald has been a dominant pitcher, boasting a 1.48 earned run average, which ranks eighth among all pitchers in NCS division III. McDonald also ranks second in the section in innings pitched with 56.2.
McDonald has also been getting it done at the plate with 17 runs batted in (RBI) on the year, which ranks fourth in the section. He is joined on the list by fellow senior Liam Knowles whose 15 RBIs place him eighth in the section, just one RBI behind Sim, who is in a three-way tie for fifth in the section.
Sim is currently tied for third in the section with two home runs on the season.
A heavy contributor as of late has been junior Jerry Gaitan who pitched a complete game shutout against SP-SV, giving him enough innings pitched on the year to qualify for the ERA title, which he now leads with a 0.32 ERA.
To round out the stat leaders, senior Jordan Williams has scored 20 runs on the season, leaving him within one of the section title.
